It isn’t always easy to come off a highly revered project, as expectations are super high. Nevertheless, on ‘CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST’ Tyler gives you everything you would hope for from him plus more.
Not only does Tyler deliver strong verses throughout the album, he also brilliantly executively produces the whole project. Tyler joins forces with DJ Drama and makes ‘CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST’ a ‘Gangsta Grillz’ project for the culture. Tyler himself tweeted out how badly he wanted a ‘Gangsta Grillz’ tape back in 2010. So I guess he can check that off his goals list now.
You can hear how much thought Tyler puts into every little detail in this album. From where DJ Drama comes in, to the tempo switches in the beats to initiate different energy in the song and the flow switches. Every single thing is done with a purpose. The variety of instruments wonderfully used in this album is phenomenal. On top of that, Tyler incorporates relaxing sounds into production that make so many of the beats sound extraordinary.
There are many features on the album, some of which you’d expect, such as ex Odd Future partner Domo Genesis and hip hop legend Lil Wayne. But one name that surprised everyone when the tracklist came out was NBA YoungBoy. This isn’t because people think YoungBoy is a terrible artist far from it. It’s because he isn’t the first person you think of when you’re thinking of people Tyler The Creator would work with. He doesn’t usually make music with the type of sound Tyler creates. But when you hear YoungBoy’s verse, you are instantly blown away. With a soulful 90s R&B Motown vibe, Tyler produces the perfect platform and position for YoungBoy to shine on. As expected, the talented R&B singer Ty Dolla $ign sounds right at home on the track.
On most of the songs on the album, there are smooth transitions. Whether if it’s for a beat change. Or for an artist featured on the track to come in and kill their part. ‘CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST’ keeps you engaged throughout the entire listening process. This album is probably Tyler’s most personal album to date. He raps a lot about himself, including his love life, mistakes he made growing up in the public eye, and stories about him and his mum and where they came from.
One of the many standout tunes on the album is ‘WILSHIRE’. Tyler illustrates how he fell in love with a girl that was already in a relationship. Although he felt guilty, he couldn’t stop himself from getting involved with her. It even gets to the level where he introduces her to his mum. In the end, things didn’t work out for obvious reasons. They decide to be friends as Tyler genuinely loves her and would rather have her around as a friend than not have her around at all.
‘CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST’ has the perfect mix of hype and relaxing rap. Tyler offers the listeners songs to bop their heads to, along with songs to lay down and relax to. There are a few shock value bars that you’d expect if you’re a Tyler, The Creator fan. However, there is also brilliant top-tier lyrical rapping. From this, he shows why he should always be taken seriously as a real MC. There’s feel good music all over the project, and that makes it easily one of the most fun albums to listen to, not just in rap but across all genres this year.
